MORE GPs FOR WYOMING-OURIMBAH BUT MOST COASTIES MISS OUT

Medical practices in parts of the Coast will be able to put more GPs on the books thanks to a recent change in DPA status, but most of the region has been overlooked once again.

On 1 July 2021, Wyoming-Ourimbah was recognised as a Distribution Priority Area, which should give locals access to more GPs and Medicare subsidies.

However, the northern end of the Coast was completely ignored and is still considered a non-DPA.

“Our region is in the midst of an acute GP shortage,” Ms. McBride said.

“Practices are closing their books, they’re being forced to turn patients away and they’re being overwhelmed by lengthy cancellation lists.

“The decision to extend DPA status in Wyoming and Ourimbah is welcome, but it’s long overdue and too many other people are being left behind by this Government. It’s not good enough.”

The slight change follows months of campaigning from Ms. McBride, alongside local GPs and the community.

“It will help ease the pressure on medical practices in the region, and it will give residents quicker access to medical care, instead of forcing them to wait weeks for routine appointments.”

Close to 1,500 locals have already signed Ms. McBride’s petition, calling on the Government to guarantee more GPs for the Coast.
