September is Dementia Awareness Month and the Grant McBride MWJ is held to help raise awareness and reduce stigma for those living with dementia and those who care for them on the Coast.
“If there is no medical breakthrough there will be over one million Australians living with dementia by 2058, according to Dementia Australia,” Ms McBride said. “Sadly, dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia and there is no cure.”
The MWJ was inspired by Emma McBride’s father, the late Grant McBride, who was diagnosed with Younger Onset Alzheimer’s Disease when he was only 63 years old. “Dementia affects younger people too, approximately 25,938 Australians with dementia were diagnosed under the age of 65,” Ms McBride said.
“Last year’s MWJ was a fantastic community event with over 300 people joining to show their support and raise vital funds for Dementia Australia.”
