Older Australians cannot wait for action on aged care. The Morrison Liberal Government must act now to fix our country’s broken aged care system.
The Federal Member for Dobell, Emma McBride MP, has today launched a community campaign urgently calling on the Morrison Liberal Government to act now on aged care.
The Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety’s interim report has laid bare the disturbing state of Australia’s aged care system.
“There is not one part of Australia’s aged care system that isn’t impacted by crisis,” Ms McBride said.
“While Labor is prepared to work with the Government to progress long-term reform, there are three things the Royal Commission says it must address now to fix Australia’s broken aged care system:
“Today I visited Enid Snare, a 95 year old resident of Blue Haven whose husband has recently moved into residential aged care.
“Enid is now struggling to cope at home and has been told it will be at least 12 months or more before she gets the care she needs.
“Enid cannot wait that long. She is one of the 120,000 older Australians waiting for care at home.
“On the Central Coast the number of locals waiting for home care has grown from 1178 in September 2018, to 1286 in December, to 1423 in March and to 1455 at the end of June,” she said.
“Older Australians and their loved ones cannot wait until the final report of the Royal Commission, which is handed down in November 2020, for action on aged care.
“That includes the older Australians in residential aged care who are not receiving the high quality care they deserve in a wealthy country like Australia.
“There are dozens of reviews and hundreds of recommendations that the Morrison Liberal Government should have implemented to act on aged care. Instead we have seen four ministers over six years and $1.2 billion pulled out of aged care when Scott Morrison was Treasurer.
“It’s time to act now on aged care. Locals can sign Labor’s petition calling for the government to Act Now to fix Australia’s aged care system, by visiting the Dobell electorate office at 204/1 Bryant Drive, Tuggerah, or at my Mobile Office at Lake Haven Shopping Centre on Thursday, 7 November from 3pm.
