Barbie McBride with Emma and Yakalla volunteers at Yakalla
Last month I was invited to officially re-open Yakkalla Cottage at Bateau Bay and celebrate its federally-funded renovations.
Now in its 23rd year, Yakkalla is a safe space for people whose lives have been affected by mental illness. It hosts activities designed by members to support their recovery and integration into the broader community.
Yakkalla is an accredited NDIS provider and it is always looking for new members. Anyone is welcome to learn more about Yakkalla and how it can help register an NDIS support plan.
On a personal note, Yakalla was originally opened by my father in 1995 and later in his life he attended the Younger Onset Dementia Social Support club (YODSS) that meets at Yakkalla. If everyone on the Coast had a place like Yakkalla, who walk alongside you and recognise you as a unique individual, we would all be much healthier.
