Federal Member for Dobell Emma McBride has called on the new Minister for the Environment, Melissa Price, to stop the proposed Wallarah 2 mine near Blue Haven.
With her state colleague, Member for Wyong David Harris, Ms McBride wrote to Minister Price this week after she replaced Josh Frydenberg in the environment portfolio following the Liberal leadership shake-up.
“Minister Frydenberg had said he would make a decision on the mine by September 7, and that deadline is fast approaching,” Ms McBride said.
“The new Minister should be aware of that deadline, and aware of our community’s opposition to the mine, which threatens the water supply of the Central Coast.”
In their letter, the MPs wrote:
“The threat this mine poses to the Central Coast water supply was sufficient for it to be captured by the ‘Water Trigger’ and assessed by the Independent Expert Scientific Committee, as part of the Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act assessment. On behalf of the Central Coast community we ask you to intervene and reject this mine once and for all and stop the threat to the Central Coast’s water supply.”
“The future of the Central Coast’s drinking water sits with Minister Price,” Ms McBride said.
“Minister Frydenberg sat on his hands. Minister Price must not. She must listen to our community, listen to the advice of experts, and protect our water supply.”
