Religious Discrimination Bill

11 February 2022

The federal government has now shelved its Religious Discrimination Bill indefinitely, after Labor successfully fought for an amendment to protect all children from discrimination.

We are proud that we changed the legislation to prohibit discrimination against children based on their gender identity or sexuality.

Labor believes all Australians have the right to live their lives free of discrimination.

We don’t want to see anyone treated unfairly, whether it’s because of their gender, sexuality, age or martial status and we do not believe anyone should be discriminated against because of their religious beliefs.

That’s why Labor supports the extension of the federal anti-discrimination framework, so Australians are not discriminated against because of their religious beliefs or activities.

Labor believes any extension of the federal anti-discrimination framework must not come at the expense of existing laws that protect Australians from other forms of discrimination.

As a result of this government’s decision, it appears this legislation will not proceed.
